Livestock & Production

Our experience covers the full range of livestock activities including dairying, sheep, beef cattle, feedlotting, intensive livestock and alternate enterprises.

Drivers of Performance

Research has shown that the major influences on livestock performance are 93% feeding and management and 7% breeding. Consequently, the greatest gains will come from improvements in feeding and management, while at the same time not neglecting breeding.

Our approach is to identify the key profit drivers of livestock performance and to progressively improve performance by improving each of those drivers.

Our Experience Covers

  • Dairying
  • Sheep for wool and meat production
  • Beef cattle
  • Feedlotting cattle and lambs
  • Intensive livestock including pig and poultry
  • Alternate enterprises including deer and emus

Dairying

With dairying there is the balance between home grown feed and bought-in feed. The economic level of feeding depends on the cost of feed, the conversion of feed to milk, and the cost of milk. Consequently, the economic level of feeding may vary from year to year and even within a year. It is very easy to chase production or volume at the expense of profit.

Pasture Types

Where grazing is involved, we evaluate alternate pasture types including perennial pasture, annual pasture, lucerne, and drought tolerant species such as saltbush, before recommending the preferred mix best suited to a property.

Grazing Systems

  • Set stocking
  • Rotational grazing
  • Deferred stocking
  • Use of feed pads
  • Cell grazing
